Teaching

Teaching Approach

I have had opportunities to craft my approach to teaching at the universities of Basel, Geneva, Fribourg, Lausanne, EPFL and Neuchâtel (Switzerland), Münster and Bonn (Germany) and Paris (France). I have developed classes in French, German and English for students from diverse backgrounds (philosophy, medicine, biology, politics etc.) at various levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate).

So far, I taught foremost on topics such as ethics and political philosophy, overviews over classical texts in ethics and meta-ethics, philosophy of law, distributive justice, philosophy of death and various issues in applied ethics and bioethics (such as animal and environmental ethics, research ethics, ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, etc.).

In my teaching, I aim to develop students’ analytical thinking abilities and to foster their critical thinking and argumentative skills. If possible, I combine a historic and systematic approach. That is, my teaching confronts important texts from the history of philosophy with contemporary debates in philosophy.

It is important for me to show the link of philosophical questions to current events and practices as well as legislative decisions, such as regarding the allocation of resources in society or ethical questions at the end of life. This helps students to better grasp the importance of the issue discussed. I encourage students to participate actively in the discussion, and I provide them with detailed feedback for their writing assignments.
